DES GRANDS NORDS
FRENCH INSTITUTE / ART GALLERY

With Des Grands Nords, Riwan Tromeur (France, 1946) presents the viewer with a dizzying concatenation of facts, stories, scientific data, documents and images concerning a circumnavigation of the Boreal Sea of Barents, all combined to form a body of work which is simultaneously a travel narrative, a conspiracy theory and a photographic monument. Does the fact that its protagonists include a mythomaniac French author and the hero of a novel by Edgar Allan Poe shake our faith in its veracity? In that case, what is the origin of these genuinely otherworldly Arctic landscapes and starscapes?
