Lizzie Calligas
SWIMMERS
YMCA EXHIBITION HALL
At first sight, the images of Lizzie Calligas's series Swimmers (Greece, 1943) appear almost abstract. Looking into these large prints, we see spirals of light gleaming against dark backgrounds, like starry galaxies in a night sky; closer examination, however, reveals the presence of human figures in the middle of the vortex. Once again photography has transmuted the mundane into the fabulous, for Calligas has here photographed swimmers in the waves of a sea which the setting sun turns into coruscating diamonds.
