IANNIS THEODOROPOULOS (HELLAS) GREEN HOUSES PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER OF THESSALONIKI In the winters I used to go to Marathon, to the deserted Schinia beach beside the pines, sometimes to run and sometimes just to look at the sea. My way took me past the greenhouses. I began to be interested in their shape, and in how they were built. I returned again and again to the greenhouses, approaching them by different by-ways and always discovering something new. Eventually I began to be interested in their interior, that luminous vault, a spatial dimension enclosing landscapes. These landscapes may be cultivated, or they may be forgotten places, where nature under the plastic vault has begun to re-assert her sovereignty. Perhaps it is modern man's strange relation with "nature" that creates a cultural tension and an undefined visual satisfaction, through our desire to enclose each separate "landscape", in search of practical or psychological protection through art. Iannis Theodoropoulos was born in Athens in 1962. He studied photography at the FOCUS School, and is now a post-graduate student in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He has taken part in numerous group exhibitions, and has also presented his work in a solo exhibition at the Athens Municipal Cultural Centre in 1993.
