NIKI CHRISTODOULOU
ANASTENARIA / FIRE WALKING
CO-ORGANIZED BY THE MUNICIPAL CULTURAL SERVICES
ALATZA IMARET
Anastenaria is an ancient ceremony that managed to survive until today having continuity through time as a living tradition. While trying to document the custom I followed the steps of "Anastenarides" the firewalkers in the village Agia Eleni in Serres from 1993 till today. The result was a collection of documentary photographs which describe the ceremony but didnt satisfy me as a reflection of the mysticism that exists there. So I decided to "cut" and the result is the installation that I exhibit. Legs on fire, dancers, landscape, photos around a circle of coal. In another room there is a slide projection that, as a sequence of images, describes the ceremony. In low volume that discretely fills the room one can listen to the music that I recorded there and that Koti K. helped me arrange.
